I dreamt up this project as a companion piece to my D{ee}P R{is}K EP - out soon - when I first read about Flash Drives For Freedom and the awesome work that they’re doing. To take an old, almost obsolete piece of technology and use it to help those being oppressed is inspired, and inspiring!!
“What if I have a sort of trade-in-a-thon, a flash drive drive if you will, and give away a tape with some of my fave stuff I released as Pica, maybe a couple diff masters and a few remixes which are now unavailable elsewhere,” I thought. “That would be so fun!” And so I’m doing just that. :)
This limited run (100 only!!) of translucent neon green tapes, pro dubbed & hand stamped, will come with custom insert cards made by me out of pages of an old atlas I found in the library free bin. And in an effort to save plastic already in useable form, the cases are used. 🙂
So here’s how it’s gonna work: Flash Drives For Freedom takes old flash drives or SD cards of 8gig or larger, wipes them & gets them to people in South Korea, who then fill them with info about the outside world & get them to people in North Korea. I want YOU to send your old but operational flash drives (8 gig or larger pls!) to the good people at #flashdrivesforfreedom at this address:
Flash Drives For Freedom
c/o Human Rights Foundation
350 5th Ave
Suite 4202
New York, NY 10118
AFTER you’ve mailed a couple to them, shoot me a quick message letting me know how many you’ve mailed (mail extra & I’ll be generous, so hit up your friends, family & neighbors!) and I’ll have a tape in the mail ASAP. Alternatively, if you don’t have any old flash drives, you can make a donation to their cause of $12 or more (be generous, they’re buying flash drives with that money!) through here:
peertopeer.funraise.org/fundraiser/meagan-johnson
and again, message me with your address and I’ll get one to ye as a thank you for your help in this initiative. We will be working on an honesty system for this because I don’t want to be a middle person collecting flash drives. 😀 So be honest cuz karma’s a bitch.
Big thanks to Kevin Breidenbach for mastering tracks A3, B2 & B4. :)
And hey, even if you aren’t into tapes, please still feel free to donate to this awesome cause!!
